Wie ein Hirsch sprang er davon. Durch die Bäume eilte er. Weiter und immer weiter führte er sie, unermüdlich und schnell, da er nun endlich zu einem Entschluss gekommen war. Die Wälder um den See ließen sie hinter sich. Lange Hänge erklommen sie, die sich dunkel und scharfkantig gegen den schon vom Sonnenuntergang geröteten Himmel abhoben. Die Dämmerung senkte sich herab. Sie verschwanden, graue Schatten in einem steinigen Land.
